Area Information

The area of Kalamaki:

Kalamaki is situated on the outskirts of Chania city, located just 5 kms from the city centre to the west. It features one of the most beautiful and cleanest sandy beaches of the Chania city area, with the rest of the popular beaches of Agioi Apostoloi, Stalos or Chrysi Akti at easy access. There is a frequent bus service (every 15 minutes) linking Kalamaki to the city of Chania and to the popular tourist villages and resorts further to the west, such as Agia Marina and Platanias with its vibrant night life, bars and cafes. There are several tavernas, restaurants and cafes in the Kalamaki area, as are a number of small supermarkets and shops.    

The area west of Chania (Nea Kydonia):

Nea Kydonia extends west from Chania city and features a long coastline of beautiful beaches stretching all the way to the peninsula of Rodopou. It is a lively area with high tourism activity in the summer featuring many tourist resort areas such as the villages of Platanias and Agia Marina with their abundance of hotels, restaurants, cafes, clubs and shops. Across the beach of Agia Marina lies the island of Thodorou which is accessible by boat. On Thodorou island one can see the fort ruins, the church of Agios Theodoros and the natural habitat of the Cretan wild goat.
A lush countryside awaits the visitor only slightly inland from the coast, featuring mainly citrus orchards and a large number of traditional villages which can be visited on daytrips. Galatas village is known for its history since it is the field of many battles fought and features the Battle Monument of Crete and a museum in its central square. At Alikianos village, one can visit the church of Ai Kyr Giannis and in Meskla the fountains and the Byzantine church of Christ.
